Short Description

Representations of Greek myths are a fundamental constant in cultures of the classical ancient world. From the early period of the Greek polis up until the late Caesar period, in Greece, Etruria and Rome, everywhere we are confronted with a rich and dense pictorial world of myths. Behind this is the vital power of myths. They played a very important role in forming contemporary reality: in these myths the individual societies formulated their particular ideas and desires of life and articulated their dreams and fears. It was in these myths that people spoke about themselves and their world. The pictorial world of myths thus became the ”mirror” of the living world. Following the new questions of a historical research of myths the contributions of this symposium discuss the reception of myths for different epochs and contexts. In doing so, this opens up, again and again, unusual insights into the culture of life of the antique societies.
