The volume contains 438 catalogue items with almost 800 inscriptions that could be recorded from the original and copy tradition. The collection reflects the history of Magdeburg from the foundation of the archbishopric by Emperor Otto I in the 10th century to the time of Otto von Guericke in the 17th century. The inscriptions represent the two dynamic centres that promoted Magdeburg's development into a major medieval and early modern city: the archbishop's seat
with the cathedral chapter, and the strong city society with the council at its head, which established itself in the 12th/13th century.

Der Band enthält 438 Katalogartikel mit fast 800 Inschriften, die aus der originalen und kopialen Überlieferung erfasst werden konnten. Der Bestand spiegelt die Geschichte Magdeburgs von der Gründung des Erzbistums durch Kaiser Otto I. im 10. Jahrhundert bis in die Zeit Ottos von Guericke im 17. Jahrhundert wider. Die Inschriften repräsentieren die beiden dynamischen Zentren, welche die Entwicklung Magdeburgs zu einer mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Großstadt begünstigten: den erzbischöflichen Sitz
mit dem Domkapitel sowie die starke Stadtgesellschaft mit dem Rat an der Spitze, die sich im 12./13. Jahrhundert etablierte.

Series Description

The project aims at compiling and publishing all Latin and German inscriptions of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period until 1650. Geographically, the collection currently covers Germany and Austria as well as South Tyrol. The findings are published in the DI volumes. Each volume comprises the inscriptions from one or several urban or rural districts or from a single city, issuing even smaller complexes separately in cities with particularly large numbers of inscriptions. The series includes both preserved original inscriptions and those which survive only as copies. “Die Deutschen Inschriften” is by far the oldest current project aiming at the compilation of medieval and early modern inscriptions. It was founded over 75 years ago as a joint project of the German and Austrian Academies of Sciences and Humanities on the initiative of the Germanist Friedrich Panzer (Heidelberg) with substantial cooperation from the historians Karl Brandi (Göttingen) and Hans Hirsch (Vienna).
