The catalogue begins with the only preserved early medieval gravestone of the Roteldis. After that, inscriptions are only found again from the 14th century. The gravestones of the Lords of Kronberg and, from the 15th century onwards, the noble gravestones in Eppstein and Königstein with figural gravestones stand out. The noble self-image of the von Kronberg family is also reflected in battle scenes, family pictures and window cycles. The burial place of the Landgraves of Hesse in the princely crypt of the Homburg Residence forms a separate focus for the 17th century. Numerous tin coffins of the landgravial family bear impressive witness to the piety of a princely family in detailed biblical quotations and lengthy epitaphs. Since the end of the 16th century, inscriptions by learned theologians and jurists, pastors and officials as well as citizens have survived. The volume also contains a larger collection of half-timbered houses with poetic inscriptions. Der Band enthält ca. 400 Katalognummern mit den mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Inschriften vom 7. Jahrhundert bis zum Jahr 1700. Der Katalog beginnt mit dem einzigen erhaltenen frühmittelalterlichen Grabstein der Roteldis. Danach sind Inschriften erst wieder aus dem 14. Jahrhundert nachzuweisen. Heraus ragen die Grabplatten der Herren von Kronberg und ab dem 15. Jahrhundert die Adelsgrablegen ebendort, in Eppstein und Königstein mit Figurengrabplatten. Das adlige Selbstverständnis der Familie von Kronberg spiegelt sich darüber hinaus in Schlachten-, Familienbildern und Fensterzyklen. Einen eigenen Schwerpunkt für das 17. Jahrhundert bildet die Grablege der Landgrafen von Hessen in der Fürstengruft der Homburger Residenz. Zahlreiche Zinnsärge der landgräflichen Familie legen in ausführlichen Bibelzitaten und längeren Grabinschriften ein eindrucksvolles Zeugnis von der Frömmigkeit einer Fürstenfamilie ab. Seit dem ausgehenden 16. Jahrhundert sind Inschriften von gelehrten Theologen und Juristen, Pfarrern und Amtleuten sowie von Bürgern überliefert. Das Sammelgebiet umfasst nach heutigem Stand Deutschland und Österreich sowie Südtirol. Die Ergebnisse der Sammlung werden in den DI-Bänden ediert. Ein Band beinhaltet entweder die Inschriften eines bzw. mehrerer Stadt- oder Landkreise oder die Inschriften einzelner Städte.
