Die im Folgenden ausreichend begründete Neuvorlage der Wissenschaftsbiographie des Ethnologen Julius E. Lips richtet sich an alle an nationalsozialistischer Wissenschaftspolitik und Wissenschaftsgeschichte interessierten Leser und liefert für das eigene Fach einen Beitrag zur Ergänzung von Wissenslücken der erst Ende der 1980er Jahre begonnenen Fachgeschichtsschreibung der Ethnologie im Nationalsozialismus. Über eine Zeitspanne von den 1920er bis in die 1960er Jahre werden die organisatorische Entwicklung des Faches auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene thematisiert sowie die Wissenschafts-, Kultur-, Rassen- und Personalpolitik des Hitlerregimes einschließlich ihrer Vorläufe in der Weimarer Republik und ihrer Nachwirkungen im geteilten Deutschland der Nachkriegszeit.
Die Diskussion um den politisch engagierten Antifaschisten Julius Lips, dessen wissenschaftliches Werk fortgeführt von seiner Ehefrau Eva hier erstmals erarbeitet wird, spaltet Vertreter des eigenen Faches bis in die Gegenwart. Neue Fakten führen in bislang nicht gesehene, aufschlussreiche Zusammenhänge, die dem 1933 in die USA emigrierten Vertreter der Anti-Hitler-Koalition Julius Lips vor dem Hintergrund der erstmals in Grundzügen dokumentierten Geschichte der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde den überzeugten Nationalsozialisten Martin Heydrich gegenüberstellen, einen Parteikarrieristen, der auch nach 1945 unbelehrbar bleibt. Die beiden ungleichen Vertreter einer gemeinsamen Wissenschaftsdisziplin spiegeln exemplarisch zwei Extrempositionen des Pro und Contra zur nationalsozialistischen Rassenideologie wider, mit der auch die Ethnologie eine für das eigene Fach wenig rühmliche Koalition einging.
When in November 1933 the American anthropologist Leslie Spears responded to a letter by Martin Heydrich, editor of the German academic journal “Ethnologischer Anzeiger”, he stated quite clearly:
“With many colleagues in the United States, I share the feeling that we cannot cooperate with German enterprises at the present time. We feel that so long as the present rulers of Germany hold their antisocial course, and so long as anthropology there is made to serve malicious political ends, we can only hold ourselves aloof. When the day arrives that Germans are willing to admit freedom of thought and action, as every nation calling itself civilized must, then I shall be happy to join you in your enterprise.”
By November 1933 Julius E. Lips, social democrat, director of the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum of Anthropology and professor at the University of Cologne, had already been stripped of his positions by the rulers of the Third Reich. The following year, Lips emigrated to the USA. To finance his passage to New York he signed a contract for a book which was published in Britain and the United States in 1937. “The Savage Hits Back” became an international sucess as an instrument of anti-Nazi propaganda not least pushed by the sucess of “Savage Symphony”, a personal description of the takeover of power in Cologne by the Nazi-regime, which was published by Julius Lips’ wife Eva in 1938. Working for the anti-Hitler coalition in their American exile, Julius and Eva Lips became U.S. citizens in 1942. Six years later, the couple returned to Leipzig in the Soviet-occupied zone of post-war Germany (then not yet divided into two states), where Julius Lips - by the intervention of Heinrich Mann - became head of the university’s department of anthropology. Elected president of the university in 1949, Julius Lips suddenly died in 1950.
Meanwhile, the former curator of the “Völkerkunde und Tierkunde” Museums in Dresden, Martin Heydrich, functionary member of the NSDAP in Nazi uniform, had laid the groundwork for a career which lifted him into the director’s chair of the department of anthropology of the University of Cologne founded in 1940 and handed him the directorship of the Cologne Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum of Anthropology. In 1949, after four years of denazification, he was able to continue his career unabated, even his involvment in judgements on racial matters on behalf of the Nazi Party’s Office of Racial Policy was swept aside by the cold war. Soon Heydrich had become one of the figureheads of German anthropology once again. Research into the involvement of German anthropology in the Third Reich and the active part it played with regard to the racist ideology of the Nazis was not started before 1990, when Heydrich’s generation had passed away.
The volume at hand sets out to contribute to this research and to answer open questions concerning Julius Lips’ life and so far unattended academic work. New facts appeared among a part of yet unpublished documents by and on Martin Heydrich held in the Historical Archives of the City of Cologne. These documents, inaccessible before, revealed hithero unknown internal connections and networks as well as national and international forms of organisation within the field casting new light on the role played by German anthropologists before, during and after the Nazi period.
As it turned out, this attempt at presenting you with a rudimentary lay-out for a yet unwritten history of the German Ethnological Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde) clearly defines the context in which the extremely contrary positions of Julius Lips and Martin Heydrich vis-à-vis the Nazi’s racial ideology will have to be seen.
“If you do not read German yourself, still order this book for your University Library. It is a stunningly differentiated new classic for anybody interested in the political and ethical history of anthropology in the Germanies, and also an empirically sophisticated double case study in the ‘daily stuff’, from the banal to the paradigmatic - the stuff that ultimately makes for the historiographies and philosophies of social science thinking. Empirically, it focuses on Julius Lips, internationally halfremembered as an ethnographer and ethnologist of Labrador, inventor of the, probably justly, forgotten ethno-historical category ‘harvest cultures’, yet semi-remembered as one of the founders of legal anthropology, as well as a pioneer of what we call reflexivity now (Lips 1937).
The genius of the present book is, however, not hero worship, but context and contrast. Lips, forced émigré from Hitler to the
USA, then voluntary émigré from McCarthy to the nascent Communist East Germany, is contrasted with his coeval and co-founder of the (German) Society for Ethnology, a Martin Heydrich who made his career as a professor of Nazi Racism and continued it unhindered in post-war ‘democratic’ West Germany. The comprehensive book traces their temporary convergences, painful divergences and character contrasts in arresting detail. Kreide-Damani painstakingly paints a double portrait that, unlike much literature on anthropology practised for or against the Nazis, has no need of tedious moralisings. Here, it is the facts that count, and these reach from published work through official sources thrice removed, to the committee dynamics of the (German) Society for Ethnology, until now an addition and parallel to EASA for colleagues in the German-speaking countries. The wealth and depth of data are, in this reader’s view, reflexivity in science at its best. Any reader can open the book at any page and get engrossed in the precision of the author’s insights, as well as the contributors’ to Part Two.
Each of the contributors’ generously-appended essays details, or reflects upon, the mainlines in Kreide-Damani’s analytic trajectory. Udo Mischek details Lips’ Doctoral Thesis in Law, exploring the hitherto neglected two faces of Thomas Hobbes and later to influence Lips’ legal anthropology. Lips’ legal-anthropological ethnographicwork among the Montaignais-Naskapi on the Hudson Bay is detailed by Dietrich Treide as a milestone in viewing legal systems and cognitions within their wider economic and globalising competitive contexts. Wolfgang Liedtke uncovers the idea of a Marxotrope ‘economic formation’ called ‘the harvest cultures’, later hijacked as a ‘Kulturkreis’ by the infamous Pater Wilhelm Schmidt, and hijacked again later by East German Communist schoolbooks - not for the worst reasons, by the way (Lips 1942, 1947). Volker Harms, concentrating on Lips’ American exile, shows the incommensurate adaptations of the category ‘harvest peoples’ under West German and East German academic regimes, with contrasts that approach the tragicomic. Yet Julius Lips and his life’s and work’s companion Eva Lips decided to return from the USA to East Germany, in some ways a second exile for both. Although
Julius died at only 55, just a few years after his return, Eva continued a, politically not always uncontroversial, stewardship of their shared work, as detailed by both Lydia Icke-Schwalbe and Gudrun Meier.
With these additions, no A4 in the files, public or hitherto secret, was left unturned; yet the reader, once engrossed in the dialectics of the story, will find no detail pedantic. Precisely this meticulous love for all the data speaking for themselves, however, has motivated the author to share her book with seven colleagues who sometimes add what you and I might have planted into Appendices, re-cycling their titbits into our own text. The only sting in the tail is that this book hides all references, crucial or incidental, in nearly 2000 footnotes, all sorted aleatorically according to chapters. A book like this would have deserved a complete bibliography of both Julius and Eva Lips, and the Harvard system throughout. Still, if there is a Prize for Integrity in Social Science, Julius Lips deserves it; and if there is one for scholarship with integrity, Kreide-Damani deserves it.”

Wie mehrfach betont, ist der vorliegende Band kaum zur raschen, kursorischen Lektüre geeignet. Aufgrund seiner äußerst komplexen Abhandlung einer spezifischen Epoche der deutschsprachigen Ethnologie wendet er sich in erster Linie an die fachhistorisch interessierte Leserschaft und ist durch die ungeheure Vielzahl an erwähnten Personen (die über den ausführlichen Index leicht im Text aufzuspüren sind) gleichzeitig auch als eine Art Enzyklopädie insbesondere der ethnologischen Vorkriegslandschaft im deutschsprachigen Raum zu betrachten. Dennoch erfüllt das Buch zweifelsohne den Anspruch, auch über das Exempel Julius Lips hinaus einen wichtigen Beitrag zur gesamthaften Einschätzung der Entwicklung der wissenschaftlichen Disziplin Ethnologie im Deutschland des 20. Jahrhunderts zu leisten.
Ob die objektiv-historische Wahrheit über Julius Lips nun an den Tag gebracht wurde? Diesbezüglich muss ich mich Gudrun Meiers Fazit anschließen: Die Antwort sei dem Leser bzw. dem fachhistorischen Experten überlassen.“

„Ingrid Kreide-Damani hat die Parallelbiographie zweier ganz verschiedener Völkerkundler des letzten Jahrhunderts verfaßt, die sich stellenweise wie ein Kriminalroman liest und keine „Spur“ vernachlässigt. Das hier vorzustellende Buch ist zu mehr als der Hälfte mit einer detalierten Darstellung der Biographie von Julius Lips in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus und vor allem mit einer Analyse seiner wissenschaftlichen Werke gefüllt. Die mehr als 250 Seiten umfassende Studie bewegt sich auf höchstem wissenschaftlichen Niveau, was auch allgemein verständlich umgesetzte Methoden und Sprachgeschickt beinhaltet, sodass jeder an der Geschichte der Erforschung der deutschen Völkerkunde vornehmlich der indigenen Völker Amerikas Interessierte hier viel Wissenswertes findet.
