Forms as a shaping principle and as an emerging gestalt are a multifaceted phenomenon in music therapy processes. Reflections to this phenomenon in the 11th Music Therapy Annual (Jahrbuch Musiktherapie), published by the German Music Therapy Association (Deutsche Musiktherapeutische Gesellschaft), provide theory and methodological approaches to work with forms in the field of clinical music therapy and touch upon the areas of musicology, aesthetics, art and psychotherapy as well.
In this Music Therapy Annual (Jahrbuch Musiktherapie) published by the German Music Therapy Association (Deutsche Musiktherapeutische Gesellschaft), seven authors and three reviewers question the significance of Forms in music therapy processes – as a shaping principle and as an emerging gestalt.
Against the background of different theoretical contexts and methodological treatment practice in clinical music therapy, a wide spectrum of subjects arises related to forms - reaching from a presentation of 20th century musical concepts of form to morphological considerations of form development as a master key to mental processes up to descriptions of aesthetic experiential forms in dealing with music and reflections, to correlations between forms in both art and music.
Furthermore, transformational processes are illustrated through work with music-imagination or music therapy improvisation as well as the impact of different forms of music therapy settings upon the development of inner structure in patients.
In line with these diverse approaches to the term form, three books are recommended by the reviewers dealing with the term form in modern composition processes, in music therapy treatment within a morphological framework and in music therapy improvisation.
In this 11th volume of the Music Therapy Annual the editors again present a thought-provoking book, culminating in this collection of contributions from various authors. Their contributions make clear how differentiated the developments – in both theory and practice- of clinical music therapy progress and how these are related to musicology, aesthetics, art and psychotherapy.
