Die „Zeitschrift für Archäologie Außereuropäischer Kulturen“ (ZAAK) stellt die geographisch weit gestreuten Forschungsprojekte der Institution dar. Auf diese Weise ermöglicht sie in- und ausländischen Wissenschaftlern ein Diskussionsforum für Forschungen zu vorkolonialzeitlichen Kulturen Amerikas, Afrikas, Süd- und Ostasiens sowie des pazifischen Raumes.

Bericht über die Tätigkeit der Kommission für Archäologie Außereuropäischer Kulturen des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts im Jahr 2004
„Though starting with volume 1, the annual Zeitschrift für Archäologie Aussereuropäischer Kulturen ( ZAAK) is a well-established journal, formerly known as Beiträge zur Allgemeinen und Vergleichenden Archäologie. Founded in 1979, the organ of the Kommission für Arch¨aologie Aussereuropäischer Kulturen, a branch of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI), is devoted to research principally in pre-colonial Asia, Africa and the Americas. The new title reflects a change in perception after 25 years, no longer afraid that the term ‘Non-European’ represents a Eurocentric viewpoint; quite the opposite, the journal celebrates autonomy and multiplicity in the cultures it studies (editorial, p. 6). With the establishment
of an international editorial board and peer-review, the journal will continue to report on the DAI’s Non-European projects, but will seek to promote more actively international discussion. Volume 1 of the ZAAK lives up to expectations: this hardback
of just over 300 pages with good quality graphics contains 10 articles (3 each in German and Spanish, 4 in English) on aspects of material culture in China, Mongolia, India and Cambodia, burials in Peru and Bolivia and a study of Recuay sculpture
in the Peruvian Andes. A multilingual publication is a welcome sight, but it may be a good idea, in future, to add summaries in the journal’s other languages and adopt a more consistent policy towards translating captions (only some are translated into
German). Volume 1 ends with a report on the DAI’s 2005 activities in southern Peru, Bolivia, the Moroccan Rif, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and the palace of Karakorum in Mongolia. The fieldwork summaries are enriched by the generous inclusion of excellent colour photographs.“
