Provenance and production of late Hellenistic and early Imperial pottery from Priene at the Asia Minor West coast are analysed on the basis of two complexes, one from the South stoa at the Athena sanctuary and the other from the Insula E5 in the northwest living quarter. Both pottery assemblages are presented in their extensive and representative range of fabrics and forms including all fine and coarse pottery. They can be regarded as closed deposits and therefore as important reference point for pottery research in Asia Minor. Special focus lies on scientific analyses (WD-XRF), which ensure the origin of regional as well as supraregional imports and for the first time testify to a local pottery production at Priene.
Untersucht werden die Herkunft und Produktion späthellenistischer und frühkaiserzeitlicher Keramik von Priene an der kleinasiatischen Westküste. Die Basis bilden zwei umfangreiche und repräsentative Fundkomplexe: Der späthellenistische Komplex A stammt aus der Südhalle des Heiligtums der Stadtgöttin Athena, der frühkaiserzeitliche Komplex B aus der Insula E5 des nordwestlichen Wohnviertels. Fundkomplex A und B können als geschlossene Befunde behandelt werden und daher als wichtige Bezugspunkte für Keramikforschung in Kleinasien gelten. Ausschlaggebend für ihre Datierung sind sowohl die Präsenz bestimmter Formen als auch die Vergesellschaftung der Waren. Es werden jeweils alle Gattungen der Fundkeramik, also Fein-, Grob-, Koch-, Transport- und Baukeramik sowie die Lampen vorgelegt.
Das Spektrum der lokalen und importierten Keramik vom späten 2. Jh. v. Chr. bis in augusteische Zeit wird erstmals auf der Grundlage archäometrischer Analytik für Priene vorgelegt. Einen besonderen Schwerpunkt der Arbeit bilden die naturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen mit der wellenlängen-dispersiven Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse (WD-RFA) und Dünnschliffen zur Herkunftsbestimmung der Keramik. Geeignetes keramisches Referenzmaterial und Rohstoffproben aus Bohrkernen in der Mäanderebene belegen zum ersten Mal eine lokale Keramikproduktion in Priene. Sie umfasst ein breites Spektrum an Waren und Formen, das nun als Grundlage weiterer Forschung dienen und zur Identifizierung möglicher Exporte beitragen kann.
Die lokale Keramik Prienes lässt sich mittels der Analysen von den Produktionen umliegender Städte wie Milet und Ephesos abgrenzen, obwohl die Region des südlichen Ioniens geologisch recht einheitlich und generell durch hohen Glimmergehalt geprägt ist. Während aus Milet keine Importe nachzuweisen sind, stammt der höchste Importanteil aus Ephesos. Überregionale Importwaren umfassen Trinkgeschirr aus Pergamon und Knidos sowie Kochgefäße aus Phokaia. Für manche dieser Gruppen stehen durch eigene Analysen erstmals Ergebnisse bestimmter Formen oder umfangreiche Serien einer Ware zur Verfügung, die sich mit vorhandenen Referenzdaten, meist Mittelwerte oder Einzelproben decken und gut von Priene unterscheiden. Die beiden bearbeiteten Komplexe wurden konsequent nach lokalen und importierten Waren untergliedert, deren Relationen sich im Lauf der Zeit verändern.
„Priene has been central to the study of Hellenistic and Early Roman pottery ever since the appearance of Robert Zahn’s classic chapter (’Tongeschirr’) in the publication of the site’s 19th-century excavations. [...] Zahn lacked, however, the perspective and scientific tools that are now available and which have enabled Nina Fenn to make significant strides in her exemplary publication of pottery from renewed excavations at the site. Beginning in 1998, those excavations brought to light a wealth of new ceramic material, recovered and recorded according to modern standarts of stratigraphy and quantification. This forms the basis for Fenn’s book (a lightly reworked version of her dissertation), which, using the evidence of context and of an extensive program of scientific analysis, puts the study of ceramic production and imports to the city on an entirely new footing. [...] Fenn aims [...] to characterize the local production of the city and to identify imports, and furthermore to explore the relationship between local and imported ceramics; in short, to come to an understanding of the changing ceramic landscape of Priene in the 1st century BCE. Nina Fenn studied Classical Archaeology, History, Art History and Prehistory at the University Freiburg (1995–2001), where she received the Magister Artium for her M.A. thesis on a late Hellenistic context from the forum of Thugga in Tunisia. From 2001–2004 she hold a DFG-scholarship within the research training group “Archäologische Analytik” at the Goethe-University Frankfurt. With her Ph.D. thesis titled “Untersuchungen zu Herkunft und Produktion hellenistischer und kaiserzeitlicher Keramik in Priene” she earned her doctoral graduation in 2007. Since 2007 she holds the position as Assistant Professor, first as stand-in for one year at the Archaeological Institute at the University Saarbrücken, and since 2008 at the Archaeological Institute at the University of Cologne. Nina Fenn’s current research focuses on Roman Greece as her postdoctoral lecture qualification. Besides she organized the international conference “Networks in the Hellenistic world – according to the pottery in the eastern Mediterranean and beyond” at Cologne and Bonn 2011.
In the series of “Archäologische Forschungen” (Archaeological Studies), monographs on the various areas of research in Classical Archaeology are published, mainly concentrating on studies concerning architecture, urban research, topography and everyday culture of Greece, Asia Minor, and the periphery of the Greek world. The chronological scope ranges from the beginning of periodized history to late antiquity. The following volumes, partly to be published in sub-series, will present the findings of research and excavations in the Hellenistic and Roman towns of Priene, Aizanoi and Pompeii. “Archäologische Forschungen” are edited by the Head Office of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (German Archaeological Institute) in Berlin.
