Description

The Neue Zeitung für Einsiedler (Journal of the Internationale Arnim-Gesellschaft) is an interdisciplinary journal that offers innovative approaches to the works of well-known German Romantic writers and introduces newly discovered sources and texts that provide material for further investigation of topics pertinent to contemporary discourse. The current issue contains critical essays, miscellanea, reports, and reviews. In addition, we inform our readers about events and activities at the historical sites, organized by communities and societies who are engaged in preserving the legacy of Arnim and his circle. Exhibits at the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf, the Deutsche Romantik Museum in Frankfurt as well as Arnim’s estates in Wiepersdorf and Zernikow successfully link the past with the present underscoring its relevance today. The issue concludes with the presentation of new documents purchased by the archives, the Arnim-Bibliography of 2019-2020, the listings of the volumes of the historical-critical Weimarer Arnim-Edition and the Schriften der Internationalen Arnim-Gesellschaft, and the protocol of the executive meeting at the conference of the Internationale Arnim-Gesellschaft in Weimar in 2021.

Five essays introduce Erich Raspe’s work in Scotland (Sheila Dickson), investigate Karl V in the contentious relationship between Friedrich Schlegel and Arnim (Hans Dierkes), bring new aspects of animal magnetism in Arnim’s novella The Mad Invalid of Fort Ratonneau (Christian Drösch), and reconstruct Johann Wilhelm Ritter’s methodology of writing through the marginalia in his Fragmente aus dem Nachlasse eines jungen Physikers (Olaf Müller). Stefan Nienhaus will edit material from the two volumes of protocol from the Deutsche Tischgesellschft, recently discovered and acquired by the Goethe- and Schiller Archiv in Weimar. Christof Wingertszahn adds new sources to Arnim’s Geschichte des Prediger Tanner. Renate Moering explicates Arnim’s poem »Erzbischof Adelbert von Magdeburg« that was inspired by his visit of Magdeburg and reveals the identity of the unknown figure in Antoine Pesne’s portrait of Gottfried Adolph Daum. In his ”Stroll through the Gardens” from Zernikow to Wiepersdorf, Mathias Gebauer points to Arnim’s fascination with garden architecture that he actualized in his various gardens throughout his life. Barbara Steingieβer leads us through the two exhibits in the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf. The artfully hand-colored 18th century illustrations in the Journal des Luxus und der Moden are followed by Günther Uecker’s collection of graphic images featuring Huldigung an Hafiz. Olaf Müller concludes this part with his commentary on Ingo Nussbaumer’s installation Lichte Nacht der Iris in the newly opened Deutsche Museum der Romantik in Frankfurt.
